Submission

Submission has rolled around so quickly in such a short assignment.

I've concluded on this as my final narrative:

"To escape the repitition of her work environment, the usherette seeks solace to make a phone call; a desparate reach for freedom of the mind, whilst her body must remain grounded."

As the building is a manifestation of her mental state, the site is an abstract, mental location.

I've settled on using Aluminium as my primary material. It is both hard and lightweight, posessing a dual quality which expresses her state of mind (and it's versitile to use!)

Massing-wise, it has a heavy, geometric form weighting down a more whimsical, organic form.

But enough on explaining the conceptual, i hope the design will speak for itself. Here are the drawings and model.

Overview of the model

"Light" Whimsical space where she seeks to reach a space up high in it for her phonecall

Close ups of the 'heavy' space, representative of her work environment

Some Neater drawings

Here are a few diagrams i've drawn of manifeststions of what the narrative is trying to say.

This is a simple drawing differentiating between the choices available. Line weight is used to distinguish how worthy the path is. Noting the the single line ultimately leads to more fufillment. They are also on different planes. This tries to communicate the idea that the usherette is one amongst many. She is square just as the others are, she is right amongst the others, but the squares size and orientation makes it clear that she is not one of the others. Simply an experiment w/ expressing ideas through forms...

I particularly like this one. It is 2d in the parts portraying repitition as well as termination, but 3d in the one expressing escape and incompletion. My tutor Anna also suggested i could perhaps use Perspex for the repetitive parts, indicating the hollow-ness (is that a word?) of the masses, whilst an aerated substance such as concrete could be used for the other part.
This shows the idea of freedom being restricted by something greater threatening. Another experiment in expression through forms

Ideas/Development

So i've come up with a preliminary narrative:

"Night after night she waits. A face in a crowd of many, but alone she will remain"

I felt a key feature in this would be contrasts, as well as somehow convey a sense of struggle and on once side, incompletion and longing.

At first analysing the space inside the painting...

A little unclear i'm aware, but here are a few initial graphical ideas i had regarding the devision of the spaces within the painting. They communicate a notion of Choice, between enclosure and escape.

Also, they bring about questions regarding circulation and enclosure within the space. From observation, the enclosure can be seen graphically, but re. circulation, it's only really one of two. Despite an illusion of choice in where to sit, from where we are positioned as a viewer, we can either go into the cinema area or leave from the stairs. One has one direction and the other has many directions, leading to the same space with the same purpose.
You can see above a few ideas i've had regarding how to represent the ideas behind the narrative regarding spatial arrangements, possible 3D layouts etc.

Assignment 2 Begins

Our task for this assignment was to extract some kind of narrative from either a 17th C Dutch or an Edward hopper painting, then derive a series of rooms in accordance to this narrative.

The painting i've selected is Hopper's New York Movie.

This depicts an usherette who's alone an on the phone as moviegoers experience a movie.

Primary observations about the painting in an architectural standpoint.

- Focus/perspective.
The girl is in the foreground as a protagonist

- Lighting.
The painting is obviously devided into 2 parts according to colour, the masses are in the dark
brown shadows whilst the girl remains illuminated

The shadows occupy a much greater area than the illuminated part, showing a contrast between the masses and the singularity of the girl

- There are no windows, it is entirely enclosed
However, the movie screen can be seen as a sort of window, it provides light and serves as an opening for those inside to another place.

-There is a stark contrast in repetition and loneliness
Ceiling decorations
Door decorations
Seats

-The exit to the space is right next to her, however, due to obligation she must overcome temptation and remain

So to form my narrative,

- She is amongst the masses, but she's alone
-phone--> indicates she is bored and longing to leave
-Her physical body exists there but her mind has embarked on a journey
-She seeks to escape the repetition of her workplace

COMPLETION! :D ;D ;D

Not too much to report on for this, just knuckled down hard from dusk 'til dawn drawing.

Reporting on it now, i can't seem to find the actual diagrams, but will post as soon as they're located.
